Novartis reports strong data on three of its hypertension drugs at the ASH 2006 (American society of Hypertension )

Swiss drug major Novartis AG says that three of its drugs for the treatment of high blood pressure saw strong data presented at the American Society of Hypertension's annual scientific meeting and exposition held in New York.

The overall Phase III clinical trial program, which involved 5,000 patients, found that those on Exforge with diastolic blood pressure between 110mmHg and 120mmHg experienced an average drop of 35.8mmHg in systolic blood pressure compared to 31.8 mmHg with the combination of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor lisinopril and the diuretic HCTZ.(Hydroclorothiazide )

Although the study was primarily designed to evaluate the overall safety profile of the agent, patients on Exforge with systolic blood pressures of at least 180mmHg achieved an average reduction of 43.0mmHg compared to 31.2mmHg with the lisinopril and HCTZ (Hydroclorthiazide ) combination.
